Emily’s Speech at the AV Room Briefing #CareDay25
EPIC Youth Council member, Emily Hanbidge, delivered a speech as part of a briefing in the AV Room at Leinster House on the eve of Care Day 2025.
“Today, I’m here to share my personal journey as someone who has experienced the profound impact of being placed in a supportive foster family. My story is not just my own; it’s a testament to the incredible difference that love, kindness, and understanding can make in the lives of children who find themselves navigating the uncertain waters of the Irish foster care system.
When I first entered the foster care system, I was scared and unsure of what was happening. I had faced challenges that no child should ever have to endure, and the world felt heavy on my young shoulders. But everything changed when I was welcomed into my foster home. From the moment I stepped through that door, I was shown warmth and acceptance—a stark contrast to the childhood I had known before.
Imagine walking into a home filled with laughter, where you are greeted with genuine smiles and open arms. My foster family took the time to listen to my fears, my hopes, and my dreams. They made me feel seen and valued, treating me not just as a foster child but as a member of their family. They celebrated my successes and provided a safe space for me to express myself without fear of judgment. It was in this nurturing environment that I began to heal, grow, and succeed
Every day in my foster home was filled with simple yet meaningful moments. From cooking together in the kitchen to walking the dog or helping mam in the garden, this is where I learned what it meant to belong. I discovered that love could be unconditional and that it was okay to lean on others when times were tough. My foster mam invested her time and energy into ensuring I felt supported in every aspect of my life—from academics to emotional well-being. She encouraged me to pursue my interests and helped me navigate the challenges that came my way.
This experience of love and support transformed me. I found my voice, built my confidence, and began to dream of a future I once thought was out of reach. With my foster family by my side, I learned resilience and the value of perseverance. They taught me that my past did not define me; I could shape my own destiny with determination and hard work.
However, I also understand that not every child in foster care has the same experience. I have seen the other side, where children are placed in homes or residential homes where the caregivers struggle to provide the necessary support. These children often feel lost and unheard, facing the burden of emotional neglect. It pains me to think of what they endure, and it reminds me of the importance of advocating for resources and support for all foster children and caregivers whether they are minding children in a residential unit or their homes it shouldn’t matter.
Every child deserves a chance to thrive, just as I did. It is vital that we recognize the significance of nurturing environments and the powerful impact they have on shaping lives. We must work together to ensure that all careers receive the tools and resources they need to provide the love and support that every child so desperately craves.
In conclusion, my journey through foster care has shown me the incredible strength of a loving and supportive family. It is a reminder that love can heal wounds, build resilience, and inspire hope. Let us commit to making sure that every child has access to the kind of supportive environment that helped me flourish so that they too can dream big and reach for the stars.”
