Unaccompanied MinorsExperiences of State Care

EPIC received funding from the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission to carry out a research project on the experiences of state care amongst children and young people who have sought international protection. This research is being undertaken by Dr. Muireann Ní Raghallaigh, Dr. Prospera Tedam and Dr. Joanne Kelleher from the UCD School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice.

The research will seek to ascertain how the rights of unaccompanied minors are being upheld in Ireland as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Refugee Convention and Optional Protocol.

EPIC’s hope is that the research will provide better understanding of the needs, challenges and perspectives of these children and young people, as well as inform policy and practice to improve their access to rights.

Overall, the study aims to give voice to the experiences of children and young people seeking international protection in Ireland. Watch this space for more updates as the research project develops. If you want to know more, please contact research@epiconline.ie.
